Drinking Skeptically provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality.

DAC Discussion & Movie Screening — ‘Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial’ (Wednesday Nov. 25th)

As many of you know, tomorrow is the 150th Anniversary of the publication of ‘On The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin.

What better way to celebrate this occasion than with a discussion on Evolution education and outreach, centred around a screening of NOVA’s fantastic documentary, ‘Judgement Day: Intelligent Design On Trial.’

Many of you are also aware of the events of last Thursday, wherein a pair of non-student evangelical christians distributed creationist literature outside of the Killam Library in the form of ‘150th anniversary’ editions of ‘The Origin.’ These books, while bearing all outward appearances of the real thing, were in fact abridged and prefaced to include information on intelligent design, along with plenty of false and defamatory claims about the life and work of Charles Darwin.

Science education must overcome some serious challenges in this arena, so events like these make the marking of The Origin’s publication anniversary even more important.

Please join us this Wednesday for a screening of this very informative and important film.

This year, we’ve decided to try something new. We know our members have a lot of interesting things to say. The DAC is made up of students from diverse backgrounds of study, each with a unique perspective that they bring to the group.

Owing to this, we’ve decided to open each event (be it a movie night, discussion group, or barbecue) with a brief discussion topic presented by one of our members. Whether it’s based on their area of work or research, or just something they find fascinating, the presentations in this series are sure to stimulate great conversations.

If you want to present on a topic that interests you, please email us with your idea!

Presentations should be no more than 10 minutes in length, to be given at the beginning of a scheduled DAC event.
