Drunk Pensar

The Dalhousie Atheist Community will be hosting a pub night for atheists and freethinkers in Halifax.

Drinking Skeptically is an informal social event designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical-thinkers, and like-minded individuals.

Drinking Skeptically provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality.

For more info, visit the Drinking Skeptically website, or RSVP for the event on facebook.

DAC Discussion & Movie Screening — ‘Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial’ (Wednesday Nov. 25th)

As many of you know, tomorrow is the 150th Anniversary of the publication of ‘On The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin.

What better way to celebrate this occasion than with a discussion on Evolution education and outreach, centred around a screening of NOVA’s fantastic documentary, ‘Judgement Day: Intelligent Design On Trial.’

Many of you are also aware of the events of last Thursday, wherein a pair of non-student evangelical christians distributed creationist literature outside of the Killam Library in the form of ‘150th anniversary’ editions of ‘The Origin.’ These books, while bearing all outward appearances of the real thing, were in fact abridged and prefaced to include information on intelligent design, along with plenty of false and defamatory claims about the life and work of Charles Darwin.

Science education must overcome some serious challenges in this arena, so events like these make the marking of The Origin’s publication anniversary even more important.

Please join us this Wednesday for a screening of this very informative and important film.

When: Wednesday Nov. 25th, 6:30PM - 9PM

This riveting Oscar-nominated documentary offers an unfiltered look at a revivalist subculture where devout Christian youngsters are being primed to deliver the fundamentalist community’s religious and political messages. Building an evangelical army of tomorrow, the Kids on Fire summer camp in Devil’s Lake, N.D., is dedicated to deepening the preteens’ spirituality and sowing the seeds of political activism as they’re exhorted to ‘take back America for Christ.’

Join the DAC Next Wednesday for a screening of this fascinating (and somewhat chilling) documentary.

The event will be preceded by next week’s discussion topic, ’21st century environmental, economic, and social challenges,’ led by DAC’s very own Sarah Craig!

Event Details
When: Wednesday Oct. 28th, 6:30PM - 9PM
Where: Dalhousie Student Union Building, Council Chambers (second floor, on the right at the top of the stairs).

This year, we’ve decided to try something new. We know our members have a lot of interesting things to say. The DAC is made up of students from diverse backgrounds of study, each with a unique perspective that they bring to the group.

Owing to this, we’ve decided to open each event (be it a movie night, discussion group, or barbecue) with a brief discussion topic presented by one of our members. Whether it’s based on their area of work or research, or just something they find fascinating, the presentations in this series are sure to stimulate great conversations.

If you want to present on a topic that interests you, please email us with your idea!

Presentations should be no more than 10 minutes in length, to be given at the beginning of a scheduled DAC event.

We hope you had an awesome summer, and we hope you’re as excited as we are to be back to school at Dalhousie!

Since we have so many new members, we felt our first event should help us all get to know each other. With that in mind, we’re meeting next Wednesday at 7PM for some casual chit-chat, some snacks, and maybe some games. Meet other members, share stories, and just hang out. Small donations to cover the cost of food stuffs are welcome!

When: Wednesday Sept. 23rd, 7PM - 9PM
Where: Dalhousie Student Union Building, room 316

With a gale warning in currently effect and a pessimistic forecast for Sunday afternoon it just doesn’t make sense to gather around the grill for an outdoor evening. Who invited Danny? - ;)

We’ll reschedule the BBQ for a more promising evening and keep you posted.

“In the singular moment of noticeable conflict, Derek Rogers, a computer science major at Dalhouise University in Nova Scotia, Canada, was detained by guards for wearing a shirt with a slogan recently plastered on buses by activist groups that read “there’s probably no God, so get over it.” He was escorted to the bathroom and ordered to flip the shirt inside-out.

“One family of religious people told me that I had ruined their trip, and they drove all the way from Virginia,” said Rogers”
